Self Portrait vs The Selfie

A selfie is a picture, usually taken on a smart phone or a web cam, that you have taken by yourself and is of yourself. Selfies are either taken at an arms length away or in the mirror. These images usually appear on different types of social media. A selfie of course, is different than a self portrait.

A self portrait is either a photograph taken of an artist by him/herself or a portrait created by that artist. Though these two things may seem similar, they have quite a few differences. For example, selfies are usually taken on a device such as a phone with a camera that is typically taken close to you or taken while standing in front of a mirror. A self portrait is either made using a picture, reflection, or even from memory as a guide. The perspective and angles are different between the two photographs.

I like to take self portraits better because I enjoy going out and taking pictures with my camera. Selfies are usually used just to be posted or sent to somebody but I like how taking self portraits is more of an art and takes time and effort and they come out very nicely when compared to a picture taken on a smart phone. It is easy to take a selfie and anyone can do it but knowing that you have the skill to make a good self portrait is more enjoyable.

I think that self portraits are more valuable than selfies because selfies are something that will always be easy to do. A self portrait however, can be a work of art. Not everyone knows how to take a proper self portrait but most people don't have a hard time figuring out how to take a selfie. Self portraits are more rare than selfies are and I think that they can be way more valuable because it is better to take pride in something that you have successfully completed, rather than do what this generations and generations to come will be able to do with just the tap of a button.
