Opinions Writing Preview Activity
Story 1: Immigration laws getting out of hand
1. This story was an editorial.
2. Trump administration enforcing new laws about immigration.
3."The United States is the "melting pot" of the world. We should be doing everything we can to reach out to the world's immigrants in efforts to continue to be the world leader that we have been for so many years."
4. No, they did not.
5.They were not wishy-washy, they had strong opinions and good reasoning behind all of their opinions and had supporting evidence.

Story 2: Betsy DeVos unfit to serve as U.S. Secretary of Education
1. Reagan Wallace.
2. Why Betsy DeVos isn't fit to be U.S. Secretary of Education.
3. "She is simply unqualified for a role in the U.S. education Department."
4. Yes.
5. They weren't wishy-washy with their opinion because they seemed to very sure what their view was on this topic and that they would be able to stand behind what they said.

Story 3: Our great tree is worth saving
1. Ian Miller
2. The Bowie tree (second best tree in Austin) dying.
3. "This tree is really worth saving, even if it will cost our school some money. It holds the memory of many past graduates,and so many people are working hard to make sure this tree get well again."

5. No because he explained some good reasons why it would benefit the school and our community to save this tree.

Story 4: Going above the norm for college
1. Jake Brien
2. Getting ready for college and trying to get into it
3. "... college is essential."
4. Not really but sort of....
5. No because Jake seemed to be very confident in saying how important college is.

Story 5: Importance of Physics Class
1. Abby Ong
2. Why physics is important/ why you should take it
3. "[Physics] may not be a required class any more, but students should still consider it."
4. Yes
5. Although she may have felt strongly about her opinion, she didn't seem as confident in her opinion as some other authors in their opinions.

7. 1st person
A. A lot of opinion pieces are in first person but hard news stories aren't. Hard news stories require a quote and opinion pieces only require your personal opinion. Also, a hard news story is based on facts, and even though opinion pieces have facts their articles are biased because they are talking about what they think and will emphasize key parts to their argument.
B. You shouldn't need to have any photos in opinion pieces because the words are supposed to be powerful enough to be able to say it all.
C. Whether homework is good or not for students, school rules, and should students be required to learn a second language.
