Sports Portfolio Evaluation
Part 1: Sports Portfolios
1. Runner Up Videos
Photographer: Jordan Murph
Focus of portfolio: Sports
3 problems: - Some pictures aren't strong enough and were too plain. He put too many pictures in portfolio and some didn't belong in there.
- One picture captured good motion but it was missing a key part to it which was a person.
- He made his images artificial when there was no need, especially because he already had ones that were similar to it.
2 good things: - Pictures towards the beginning had very good lighting composition.
- Some action photos were captured at a good angle with a nice shadow showing in the background.
Impression: At first I really liked this photographer and the action that he captured in his photographs and then I realized a lot of images in his portfolio were dull and nothing that made me interested in the picture.
Photographer: Sam Adams
Focus of portfolio: Bikers/skating sports
3 problems: - Too many silhouettes and not enough action in the picture. - His backgrounds were distracting (tree with helicopter and telephone lines with biker) and if he had moved or gotten closer to his subject a lot of pictures would've been better. - He was accused of photo shopping pictures and some boring photos were taken.h
2 good things: - He had a really good image with girls playing soccer where there was good expression shown on their faces and the soccer ball was in the picture.
Impression: I liked most of this persons photos but I also agreed that some of the things in the background was too distracting or interfered with the picture.
Photographer: Darly Peveto
Focus of portfolio: Peoples lives
3 problems: - Some of the photos captions either weren't good or didn't go well with the photograph.
- Some of the photos looked a little edited or fake. - Some of the photos had no purpose of being in the portfolio or just simply didn't have enough meaning.
2 good things: - There was some good color variation in some photos and the lighting was sometimes good. - The subjects were usually in focus and were very clear.
2. Winning Portfolio
a. The judges liked that the portfolio was very well put together and there were consistant photos. None or very few of the pictures in the portfolio seemed to be weak and/or lack importance. Each photo has a purpose and each one of them are interesting to look at.
b. The strengths that I see in these photos are that they are all important and interesting to look at. I like the different pictures and I think that there were some very interesting perspectives in the photos, aswell as some of the things that the photographer had edited looked very nice.
3. Contest Recap
a. The judges mainly decided the winning portfolio by which portfolio had a lot of variety but still had a lot of purpose to the photo. Many portfolios had the same theme, telling the same story, and had little variety in their photos. Other photos had a good variety but lacked importance in most of the photos. In the winning portfolio, the photographer had many different types of pictures that all had all subjects in the picture doing something. Although many pictures in the portfolio weren't as strong as some other pictures in that portfolio, none of the pictures were bad and they all had a purpose while telling a story at the same time.
Part 2: Individual Images
1. I agree with the judges on the photo of the female runners on the track with the girl who fell. I think that right now (in the picture) the people who will not be tripped/ affected by the girl who fell aren't important in the photo so the photographer should've waited a few seconds longer until people who weren't affected just kept running and you really got to see the domino affect that the woman had once she fell.
2. I don't agree with the judges on the first picture shown in the first video of this section because even though there is not much in the photos background which is only how the judges saw it, I admire the point/ story that this picture was trying to get across. I think that the photographer was trying to make you feel as if you were in the kart (I don't know what thats called...?) and I think it added some creativity to the photo.
